Main by bike + boat

Frankfurt/Main - Bamberg / Bamberg - Frankfurt/Main

Itinerary

Route

Mostly well-developed long-distance cycle paths along flat river landscapes, mostly asphalted or finely graveled cycle paths, quiet side roads, gentle hills and occasional climbs must be mastered, ideal for sporty, active connoisseurs.

Day 1: Frankfurt am Main – Aschaffenburg
Individual arrival and embarkation at 4:00 p.m. in Frankfurt am Main. Your onboard tour guide and crew will welcome you aboard, and at 5:00 p.m. we’ll cast off for Aschaffenburg! Located at the foot of the Spessart hills, this tranquil university town has many magnificent buildings to offer. Johannisburg Castle, built of red sandstone, is one of the most important and beautiful Renaissance buildings in Germany. Ludwig I called the city of Aschaffenburg the “Bavarian Nice” because of its pleasant climate. Numerous wine bars, cafés, and quaint inns can be found here.

Day 2: Aschaffenburg – Freudenberg, approx. 48 km
Until shortly before Bürgstadt/Miltenberg, you can cycle on either the right or left side of the Main. The floodplain forest between Nilkheim and Niedernheim is pleasant to cycle through in summer. From Kleinwallstadt to Erlenbach, you will be accompanied by the “Planeten-Radweg” (Planet Cycle Path). Today, your ship is moored in Freudenberg, approx. 10 km from Miltenberg. High above the Main and the town of Freudenberg, Freudenburg Castle towers over the foothills of the Franconian Odenwald.

Day 3: Freudenberg – Wertheim – Lohr, approx. 40-45 km
While you enjoy a leisurely breakfast, your ship will take you to Wertheim. In Wertheim, which has retained the character of an old Franconian town, you will start today’s bike tour through the typical Main landscape. There is much to see on the route to Lohr with its picturesque old town with historic buildings and Franconian half-timbered houses.

Day 4: Lohr – Karlstadt – Würzburg, approx. 30 km
Early in the morning, the ship will take you past Gemünden to Karlstadt, where you will get on your bike. Romantic old town and idyllic village – Karlstadt offers both. Discover buildings over 800 years old in the old town surrounded by walls, towers, and gates. Cycle leisurely to Würzburg, where you will meet your ship again in the afternoon. Visit the Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, or enjoy the beautiful view from the Marienburg Fortress.

Day 5: Würzburg – Kitzingen/Marktbreit, approx. 30-40 km
Your bike tour takes you along the Main Cycle Route from Würzburg through the fertile Ochsenfurther Gau to Ochsenfurt with its remarkable Lanzentürmchen tower and via the historic town of Marktbreit with its magnificent town houses to Kitzingen. Alternatively, your ship will dock in Marktbreit (shortening the bike tour by approx. 10 km).

Day 6: Kitzingen/Marktbreit – Volkach – Schweinfurt, approx. 40-60 km
Via Schwarzach am Main, you will first cycle to Volkach (here you have the option of leaving the ship and shortening the bike tour). The pilgrimage church of St. Maria im Weingarten is well worth a visit here. Continue to Fahr, where you will be greeted by a welcome sign in the shape of a Bocksbeutel wine bottle, and then on to Schweinfurt via the Volkach Main loop, where the valley becomes narrower and the vineyards more numerous.

Day 7: Schweinfurt – Haßfurt – Bamberg, approx. 35-40 km
In the morning, take the boat to Haßfurt. Then cycle via Zeil am Main, located exactly at the junction between wine and beer Franconia, to Bamberg. Like Rome, the city was built on seven hills and is therefore often referred to as the “Franconian Rome.” Experience the fascination of this World Heritage Site. Also worth seeing is the “Little Venice” fishermen’s quarter, a row of 17th-century houses. No visit to Bamberg is complete without a cold beer. There are still eleven independent breweries in the city!

Day 8: Bamberg
Disembarkation from 9:00 a.m. and individual departure.

Day 1: Bamberg
Individual arrival in Bamberg and embarkation from 4:00 p.m. Bamberg is a multifaceted city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The “island city” presents itself as a little Venice, the “mountain city” as Franconian Rome, and the “garden city” as something unique.

Day 2: Bamberg – Haßfurt – Schweinfurt, approx. 30-40 km
In the morning, you will reach Haßfurt with its beautiful historic old town. The city is located between two nature parks and is home to charming sacred buildings such as the late Gothic Ritterkapelle chapel and the parish church with figures by Tilman Riemenschneider. Here you will get on your bike and ride to the former imperial city of Schweinfurt.

Day 3: Schweinfurt – Volkach – Kitzingen/Marktbreit, approx. 32-60 km
Kitzingen or Marktbreit (depending on mooring confirmation) is your destination for today. The historic wine trading town of Kitzingen is home to the German Carnival Museum, which provides an insight into an important part of Franconian customs. The Falterturm tower with its leaning spire is considered the town’s landmark. In Kitzingen, old beer brewing and winegrowing traditions meet, as evidenced by historic cellars. Some of Kitzingen’s restaurants offer guests hearty Franconian fare such as Sauerbraten with dumplings or “Karpfen Blau” (blue carp). Alternatively, you can stay on board until Volkach, shortening the bike tour by about 25 kilometers.

Day 4: Kitzingen/Marktbreit – Würzburg, approx. 40 km
Würzburg awaits you today with many sights. One of them is the Würzburg Residence, which is considered one of the most important palaces in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. St. Kilian’s Cathedral and the Marienberg Fortress are also well known. Würzburg is a center of Franconian wine and, as a young student city, is still full of life in the evenings.

Day 5: Würzburg – Karlstadt – Lohr, approx. 30 km
You will reach Karlstadt in the morning. Towers, gates, and walls surround the old town with its half-timbered houses and narrow streets. Today’s destination is the town of Lohr am Main. Typical Franconian half-timbered architecture also characterizes the old town of this gateway to the Spessart. Buildings such as the Kurmainzer Castle underline the fairytale character of the town.

Day 6: Lohr – Wertheim – Freudenberg, approx. 30 km
Take the boat to the old royal seat of Wertheim, whose landmark is the castle of the same name. The town, with its historic market square and perhaps the narrowest house in Franconia, is the starting point for today’s cycling stage to Freudenberg. High above the Main and the town of Freudenberg, Freudenburg Castle towers over the foothills of the Franconian Odenwald. Freudenburg Castle is well known among castle connoisseurs for its striking keep.

Day 7: Freudenberg – Aschaffenburg – Frankfurt am Main, approx. 50 km
The highlight of today’s bike tour is Miltenberg with its Mildenburg Castle, built in 1200. The “Planeten-Radweg” (Planet Cycle Path) accompanies you from Erlenbach to Kleinwallstadt. Here you can find information about the celestial bodies. The floodplain forest between Niedernheim and Nilkheim is pleasant to cycle through in summer. All along the Main River, there are benches and rest areas that invite you to take a break or even go for a swim. Your destination is the beautiful, tranquil university town of Aschaffenburg with its magnificent Renaissance castle Johannisburg, built of red sandstone. Numerous wine bars, cafés, and rustic inns await your visit. In the evening, a farewell dinner awaits you as your ship takes you to Frankfurt am Main.

Day 8: Frankfurt am Main
