The tranquillity, nature and the famous skating race have made Friesland a very popular region for skaters and cyclists. Follow the route of the race along the eleven Frisian towns with historic town charter and enjoy the idyll between drainage canals, rivers and lakes.
With its canals, monuments and shopping streets, the provincial capital Leeuwarden is one of Holland’s best-kept secrets. It was named European Capital of Culture in 2018 and is home to several museums, including the Fries Museum, which focuses on the history and culture of the province. And that’s not the only thing that makes the province of Friesland so exceptional. Friesland is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, a unique coastal ecosystem that is home to a variety of birds and marine life. The region is also known for its traditional windmills, many of which are still in operation today and help to preserve the Frisian landscape.

Day 1: Leeuwarden
Day 2: Leeuwarden – Sneek/Ijlst, approx. 45 km
The first cycling day brings you to Sneek, a small town that once was surrounded by canals and walls. You can walk through the city centre and visit the city hall and the Martini church.
Day 3: Sneek/Ijlst – Balk/Wijckel, approx. 50 km
Today, you cycle to Balk or Wijckel, which is situated near the Ijssel Lake. You will pass the nice towns Sloten while enjoying the typical Frisian landscape with the well-known terps.
Day 4: Balk/Wijckel – Bolsward, approx. 51-58 km
Day 5: Bolsward – Harlingen/Franeker, approx. 30-45 km
On the route to Harlingen or Franeker you will pass Makkum, which is known for its pottery. Enjoy your day, at the "Waddenzee".
Day 6: Harlingen/Franeker – Dokkum, approx. 48/63 or 60/75 km
Day 7: Dokkum – Leeuwarden, approx. 35 km
Day 8: Leeuwarden
