In 1932 the South Sea was closed off with an enormous dam and this created the IJsselmeer. During the centuries before this closing off, many thousands of families lived on the banks of the South Sea and lived on whale fishing. Today, there’s a never-ending quiet in these fishing villages of olden days. But the memories of this glorious time remained. They are saved in fascinating museums and can be seen in the quiet villages and picturesque settlements. Our cycling tour leads us back in time along the banks of the IJsselmeer and provides us wonderful views of the water, green woods and extensive polders.
Route
Tour profile:
Day 1: Nunspeet
Day 2: Nunspeet – Amersfoort, approx. 60 km
Nunspeet is surrounded by nature. The first cycle ride takes you to Amersfoort, a town where history is still alive. Behind the city walls, you can stroll through the cosy alleyways.
Day 3: Amersfoort – Amsterdam, approx. 65 km
Today you cycle to Purmerend. You will pass many typical Dutch villages, such as Baarn and Muiderberg. Visit Naarden - Vesting, one of the best preserved fortified moats in Europe. Enjoy the nature in the old moorland area ‘Eemland’, which has been cultivated for a long time.
Day 4: Amsterdam – Enkhuizen, approx. 65 km
On the way to Enkhuizen you should definitely stop in Edam, famous for cheese, or in ‘Broekerhafen’. After a lovely cycle tour, you will reach your destination for today, Enkhuizen, a very prominent harbour town in the ‘Golden Century’.
Day 5: Enkhuizen – Balk/Wijckel/Lemmer, approx. ca. 35-40 km
In the morning you take the ferry to Stavoren (not included). You must bring your own luggage and bike on the ferry. The hotel is approx. 500 m from the harbour. The luggage driver will be waiting for you in Stavoren harbour and will transport your luggage as usual. You cycle past typical Frisian villages. Stavoren, for example, has become very well known as it is located along the route of the Eleven Cities Tour.
Important note: When you leave the ferry in Stavoren, you still have a 50 - 100 metre walk to the luggage transport. For safety reasons, the driver is not allowed to drive any further to the harbour. So please take your luggage to the driver and he will be happy to collect it and transport it to the next hotel.
Day 6: Balk/Wijckel/Lemmer – Zwartsluis, approx. 50-62 km
Before leaving Lemmer you should visit the last still working steam pumping station. Between Balk/Wijckel/Lemmer and Zwartsluis, you will cycle through the national park ’De Weerribben’, an ancient peat moor area. The former fortress Swartsluys is the place to be today for those who enjoy water sports.
Day 7: Zwartsluis – Nunspeet, approx. 52 km
The most striking sight en route to Nunspeet is the old Hanseatic town of Kampen with its almost 500 monuments! After passing the village of Noordeinde, you are back in the Veluwe landscape.
