The "Fietsen", as bicycles are affectionately known in the Netherlands, are as much a part of the locals’ attitude to life as windmills, tulips and cheese. So what better way to explore the Dutch Hanseatic cities than by bike? Experience the cities of the once mighty trading alliance, strung together like pearls on a string, and cycle along ancient streets and medieval city walls. Of course, nature lovers will also get their money’s worth. You will explore the Rhine Valley and cycle along its enchanting tributary, the IJssel, and across the so-called "border lakes", situated between the "old" and the "new" land reclaimed from the sea. On this cycle and boat trip, you will pass through the forest and moorland landscapes of the Achterhoek, the Veluwe and the Goois nature reserve. However, restaurants and attractive shopping opportunities are never far away
Route
Holland is the land of cyclists and is criss-crossed by a large network of well-developed cycle paths. The routes are generally flat and can be classified as easy - no difficult climbs and good cycle paths/side roads.
Individual arrival and embarkation from 12:30 pm in Amsterdam Oosterdok. At around 2 pm the ship sails to Wijk bij Buurstede, a charming town on the Lower Rhine. Stroll through the medieval alleyways and the market square on your own!
During breakfast, the ship sails to Wageningen. Your first cycle tour starts there through the charming river valley of the Lower Rhine. Continue through the forests and heathlands of the Veluwe National Park. The 5400-hectare park is home to many plants and animals (if you would like to visit the park, admission day ticket approx. € 13). In the afternoon you cycle through the outskirts of Arnhem with its beautiful parks Sonsbeek and Zijpendaal.
Boat trip to Doesburg (pronounced "Duusbürch"). From here you follow the Hanseatic route along the IJssel to Bronkhorst, which prides itself on being the smallest town in the Netherlands. The destination of your tour is Zutphen, the city of towers. You can see the large and small church towers that adorn the city’s panorama from afar. During dinner, a boat trip to Deventer. The historic Stadsplein de Brink was already the central meeting place in Deventer in Hanseatic times and today offers many cozy café terraces
During breakfast, the boat sails to Wijhe. You first take the ferry (approx. € 1.50 per person) across the IJssel and then cycle through wooded areas and the beautiful natural landscape of the eastern Veluwe. In the afternoon you will reach Hattem and Zwolle. Both cities are lively Hanseatic towns and have a charming, medieval old town. During dinner, the ship will take you to Kampen. The town is also the home port of the Kamper Kogge, a replica of a medieval Hanseatic cog.
Today’s cycle tour starts after a morning boat trip to Reevesluis. Along the Veluwemeer - where you can swim, boat, surf and much more - you cycle through typical Dutch landscapes to Elburg, a charming fortified and fishing town. Don’t miss a visit to the historic town center, which measures just 250 by 350 metres. You will reach Harderwijk through large wooded areas of the Veluwe. A walk through the town will inevitably lead you to the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, a basilica from the 14th/15th century.
Today your cycle tour takes you through flat coastal landscapes, forests and moors. If the weather is fine, you should take a break for a swim in the Strand Nulde recreation area. Cycle along the Eem to Spakenburg, which has always been a fishing port and whose museum harbor is now the heart of the small town.
During breakfast, a boat trip to Huizen. You then cycle to the beautiful fortified town of Naarden and Muiderslot Castle in Muiden. You finally reach Amsterdam on quiet paths. Use the afternoon to explore the many sights and special features of the city!
Disembarkation after the breakfast and individual departure or extension.
