Tour profile
Route Zaanse Schans – Amsterdam
Day 1: Zaanse Schans – Alkmaar
Individual arrival. Embarkation between 1 pm and 12 pm. Your ship is moored next to Zaanse Schans, a unique open-air museum where people still work and live in the traditional houses and windmills. This village is mainly dominated by its windmills, the oldest of which was built in 1673. Walking through the village you will come across a clock museum, an old corner store, a house with antique furnishings, a clog maker and a cheese dairy.
Mare fan Fryslan: At 2:30 pm the ship leaves the harbor. While you are driving to Alkmaar, the guide will give more details about the tour, cycling and safety precautions.
Leafde fan Fryslan: In the late afternoon you will have the opportunity to take a short test ride on the bike.
Day 2: Round trip Alkmaar approx. 34 - 40 km.
Today you have the opportunity to explore the beautiful North Holland Dune Reserve, a 5,300 hectare forest and dune area with unique landscapes. The dunes provide the drinking water for almost all of North Holland. After a visit to the beach and the artists village of Bergen, you will cycle back to Alkmaar, where you can visit the beautiful old town. This city is known as the Dutch cheese city.
Day 3: Alkmaar – Den Helder, approx. 30 - 53 km
Today’s bike tour leads north of Alkmaar towards the North Sea along more beautiful tulip fields. The sandy beach is one of the most beautiful in the whole Netherlands, a perfect place to enjoy the magnificent view. Nearby - and certainly worth a visit - is the artist town of Bergen. Then continue cycling through the North Holland Dune Reserve to Den Helder: this piece of land wedged between the North Sea and the IJsselmeer is home to the largest bulb field in the world.
Day 4: Den Helder – Oudeschild, round trip Texel Island, approx. 43 - 48 km
During breakfast the ship sails to Texel, the largest Wadden Sea island. Today you can choose a shorter route or take a longer tour on the island. You will cycle through beautiful nature parks and here on Texel you will also find the blooming flower fields so typical for Holland! The signposts will lead you through picturesque villages and landscapes to the seal sanctuary "Ecomare". At the end of your bike tour, you can enjoy a locally brewed, well-deserved beer during a visit to the small brewery near Oudeschild.
Day 5: Oudeschild – Enkhuizen, sailing day
Today we sail! If you wish, you can help navigate and set the sails. You do not need any sailing experience. But of course you can also just relax and enjoy the sailing and the landscape around the IJsselmeer. In the afternoon the ship arrives in Enkhuizen, an old town with centuries of maritime tradition. Take a stroll through the beautiful, historic harbor of the "herring city" and the historic old town. Tonight, dinner will not be served on board. Instead, try one of the many convivial restaurants in Enkhuizen. Or pack a picnic bag and enjoy the evening on the shores of the IJsselmeer!
Day 6: Enkhuizen – Hoorn – Volendam, approx. 24 km
In the morning you will sail across Lake IJssel to Hoorn. In the 17th century the city was the seat of the Dutch East India Company and one of the most important ports in the world. Your afternoon bike ride takes you to the picturesque fishing town of Volendam on the shores of the IJsselmeer. On the way you will pass Edam. Edam cheese, covered in red or yellow wax, is now known worldwide. In earlier times, however, Edam was mainly known for shipbuilding and its harbor. In the 17th century, Edam cheese became the most popular variety in the world, as sailors took it with them on all their voyages. Due to its long shelf life, it was often used as a means of exchange for spices and other exotic delicacies.
Day 7: Volendam – Keukenhof – Amsterdam, full day bus excursion
Today, a relaxing bus ride through the oldest tulip fields in Holland is on the agenda. Your destination: the famous Keukenhof Park. Probably the most beautiful bulbous flower park in the world, it is a magical place where spring beams at you from every corner. The colorfulness is simply overwhelming: seven million blooming tulips in a magnificent 80-hectare setting of traditional and modern garden architecture. You can also admire various hyacinths, daffodils and many other floral beauties here. In the afternoon, the bus will take you back to Amsterdam, where you will spend one last relaxing night on your floating hotel.
