This great tour of Venice starts in Vicenza and loops like a pearl necklace through the Veneto region. The area is filled with valleys, lagoons, rivers as well as great architecture, including the unique buildings and bridges of Venice and the famous Palladian Villas of the Veneto (Ville Venete). The spectacular 15th to 19th century Palladian villas are scattered all over the Venetian plain (numbering about 5000!). The 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio designed many of these. You’ll soon notice he preferred the classic Roman style. The route will take you along many Prosecco vineyards and you’ll have ample opportunity to taste some wine!
Beginning to bike in Venice, you’ll cycle on narrow islands along the coast and take a ferry to Chioggia, a major fishing port on the Adriatic. Padova (Padua) is known for its frescoes by Giotto and the University of Padua, one of Europe’s oldest (1222) and where Galileo was once a professor. Padua is one of the most important art cities in Italy and also the economic capital of Veneto. To complete the loop you’ll head back to Vicenza to finish your magnificent bike tour in Italy - one of the most historic and artistic regions in Europe!
Route
Tour profile: Level 1-2
Day 1: Vicenza
Individual arrival in Vicenza.
Day 2: Vicenza – Bassano del Grappa, approx. 40 km
From Vicenza you head towards Marostica, famous for its castle and the stone chessboard in the main square. Then you reach Bassano del Grappa with its covered bridge made of wood and the famous Grappa.
Day 3: Bassano – Treviso, approx. 65 km
Today while cycling along the Prosecco vineyards, you will be able to visit the very famous Palladio villa: Villa Barbaro. You can choose whether to have a glass of Prosecco in one of the wineshops along the way or whether to have it as ’aperitivo’ in Treviso before dinner.
Day 4: Treviso – Mestre/Venezia, approx. 25 - 45 km
You follow the river Sile to Casale. At the end of the tour Venice awaits you. Discover a maze of alleys and canals. The accommodation is located in Mestre.
Day 5: Mestre/Venezia mainland
Today you can decide to give your bike a day of rest and spend your time in Venice, exploring its timeless fascination on foot. Alternatively, you can enjoy another exciting cycling day (ca. 65 km) by pedalling on the two narrow islands that divide the sea from the lagoon: the island of Lido, with the ancient hamlet of Malamocco, once capital of the Serenissima Republic, and the island of Pellestrina, with its long wild beaches. If you have time you can take the motorboat from Pellestrina and visit Chioggia, too.
6. Mestre/Venice – Padua thermal district, approx. 55 km
You will start following the Brenta Canal, overlooked by the countryside villas of the ancient Venetian nobility (Villa Malcontenta, Villa Widmann, Villa Pisani) until you reach the hamlet of Stra. From here you will cycle along the Piovego Canal, which will lead you to the city centre of Padua, home to one of the oldest Italian (and European) universities and rich in art and history. Finally, along the cycle path of the Battaglia canal, you will head towards the Euganean Hills, where youwill have the chance to relax in the largest European thermal district.
Day 7: Padoua thermal district – Vicenza, approx. 50 km
From the Euganean Hills you cycle along the river Bacchiglione, which will lead you back to Vicenza. Before reaching the city, along the bike path you can admire the Palladian masterpiece, Villa La Rotonda. Finally, let yourself be enchanted once again by the old town of Vicenza with its beautiful private palaces and the Basilica Palladiana.
