The bike tour starts in the world cultural heritage town Bamberg, very fascinating with its unique historical townscape. You cycle on to the Franconian wine-growing lands until you reach the residence of Wuerzburg, also classified UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1982.
From here on, the landscape will change slowly as the vineyards disappear in favour of the green forests of the Spessart. On paved bike trails and always staying close to the Main, you will pass numerous lovely villages sticking out thanks to their neat half-timbered constructions. Short stages and many worthwhile breaks make this trip especially enjoyable.
Route
Tour profile/ Level 1:
You mostly cycle on paved and nearly traffic-free routes. The specially signposted cycle track often runs directly at the Main riverside without any significant gradients.
5-day tour / Bamberg – Wuerzburg
Day 1: Bamberg
Once you’ve arrived, take the time to discover the old city, with its breweries and churches. We recommend seeing the Kaiserdom with its world-famous sculptures, such as the Bamberg knight and Heinrich II’s sarcophagus.
Day 2: Bamberg – Haßfurt, approx. 37 km
Today you’ll be following the Regnitz until you reach the Main, which will then guide you to the Maria Limbach pilgrims’ church. You’ll come upon the first vineyards, which mark the the border between the beer- and wine-producing areas of Franconia. Your day’s journey will end in Haßfurt, whose historic center is well worth your while to visit.
Day 3: Haßfurt – Volkach, approx. 56 km
A quick side-trip to beautiful Theres will give you new energy for the rest of the trip. Forests, fields, meadows, and the Main’s floodplains offer a nicely varied landscape and guide you to Schweinfurt. In the afternoon you’ll ride to Volkach, known for its excellent wines, by way of Fahr, city of the Bocksbeutel (a wide, rounded wine bottle typical for the region).
Day 4: Volkach –Wuerzburg, approx. 65 km
After leaving Volkach you’ll head away from the Main for a bit, following canals until you make it back to the Main in Schwarzach. The level, well-paved bike route means you’ll be in Wuerzburg in no time, leaving plenty of opportunities to tour the city in the afternoon.
Day 5: Wuerzburg
Individual departure or extension.
8-day tour / Bamberg – Aschaffenburg
Day 1: Bamberg
Once you’ve arrived, take the time to discover the old city, with its breweries and churches. We recommend seeing the Kaiserdom with its world-famous sculptures, such as the Bamberg knight and Heinrich II’s sarcophagus.
Day 2: Bamberg – Schweinfurt, approx. 61 km
In the morning you follow the Regnitz for a short distance to the Main, which leads you to the Maria Limbach pilgrimage church, which is well worth seeing. Now the first vineyards begin, marking the border between beer and wine Franconia. Marvel at the historical center in Hassfurt. For a bit of refreshment, it’s worth making a detour to the pretty town of Theres right on the banks of the Main.
Day 3: Schweinfurt – Volkach, approx. 30 km
Day 4: Volkach – Wuerzburg, approx. 65 km
After leaving Volkach you’ll head away from the Main for a bit, following canals until you make it back to the Main in Schwarzach. The level, well-paved bike route means you’ll be in Wuerzburg in no time, leaving plenty of opportunities to tour the city in the afternoon.
Day 5: Wuerzburg – Lohr, approx. 60 km
On your way to Karlstadt and its famous downtown area, you’ll pass through Veitshoechheim, getting a chance to see the bishop’s summer residence, as well as the French rococo garden. The look of the countryside is changing: instead of the characteristic vines there are shady forests directly at the bicycle path. On flat paths you cycle to Gemuenden, the town of the three rivers or further on to Lohr.
Day 6: Lohr – Wertheim, approx. 46 km
The Main took millions of years to carve out the close-packed hills of the area. Thankfully, your trip will not take that long. After you pass Rothenfels, whose castle guards the narrow valley, you’ll reach Marktheidenfeld and, finally, Wertheim. Take some time to see the beautiful half-timbered houses in the old city during your stay here.
Day 7: Wertheim –Aschaffenburg, approx. 36 - 77 km
Today, the route leads you mainly flat to Miltenberg, which proudly presents itself with its half-timbered houses. Here you can shorten your bike stage to Aschaffenburg by train (train tickets not included). Alternatively, you can cycle through vineyards to the wine town of Klingenberg, where you can also take the train to Aschaffenburg. The Main cycle path remains pleasantly flat and well paved, so that the last kilometers to Aschaffenburg fly by before you are greeted by the sandstone Johannisburg Castle.
Day 8: Aschaffenburg
Individual departure or extension.
