Map Moselle Bike and Boat

Route

Tour profile / Level 1

You ride mostly on bike paths, farm roads and on dirt roads and have hardly any inclines to overcome. The quality of the Moselle Cycle Path is excellent. There are practically no unpaved or poorly passable stretches of road. The route runs almost exclusively on asphalt paths.

Route Cochem – Metz

Day 1: Cochem
Embarkation and check-in from 2 pm in Cochem. After the welcome, the tour guide will take you on a walking tour of Cochem. Cochem is a cozy and characteristic Moselle town with steep vineyards, wooded hills, medieval castle and a picturesque town center with beautiful half-timbered houses. You can visit the castle or drink a glass of wine from the region. The program includes a visit to the Reichsburg Castle.

Day 2: Cochem – Zell, approx. 39 km
After breakfast, cycle to Beilstein, one of the best preserved historic villages along the Moselle. The ruins of Metternich Castle loom over the village and you will be given the opportunity to explore them. After leaving Beilstein, you will pass the steepest vineyard in Europe at Bremmer Calmont, with inclines between 50 and 55 degrees. Today’s tour ends in Zell an der Mosel, known in the industry for its "Zeller Schwarze Katz" wine. In Zell you should take the opportunity to get to know the good wines of the Moselle.

Day 3: Zell on the Moselle – Bernkastel-Kues, approx. 45 km
Today you cycle from Zell an der Mosel to the romantic village of Traben-Trarbach, which is located on the left bank of the Mosel and is known for its Art Nouveau style. From there you will cycle through the wine town of Kröv - known for its popular Kröver wine - to Bernkastel-Kues, your destination for the night. The large half-timbered houses surrounding the marketplace of Bernkastel-Kues date back to the Middle Ages and are a photographer’s delight. After a city tour, you will reach the ship in Kues.

Day 4: Bernkastel-Kues – Neumagen – Schweich – Trier, approx. 28 or 54 km
Today you will pass Brauneberg, Piesport and Trittenheim. Piesport produces some good white wines. Especially the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen enjoys great fame. Trittenheim is located in a sharp sharp curve of the Moselle. It is surrounded by outstretched vineyards. In the morning or early afternoon you will reach Neumagen, which was already an important center for wine production in Roman times. Here you have the option to disembark already or to continue cycling to Schweich. From Schweich you will cycle to Trier, the oldest city in Germany and a lively and interesting university town.

Day 5: Trier – Saarburg, approx. 28 km
In the morning, your guide will lead you through Trier and there will also be plenty of time to discover Trier on your own. After lunch, you will get on your bike and continue your journey along the rivers Moselle and Saar to Saarburg, a charming old town situated on the most beautiful part of the Saar. Here the banks are densely forested. The castle of Saarburg was built here in the middle of the 10th century. In the middle of Saarburg town center there is a 20m high waterfall. At the foot of the waterfall there is an old mill, which is driven by the river. In this part of the town, the oldest houses are from the 17th and 18th centuries, giving the town its picturesque appearance. Today there is no dinner on board. You can visit one of the restaurants of Saarburg.

Day 6: Saarburg – Remich, approx. 45 or 53 km
Today there are two tour options: One is easier, but a little longer and goes along the riverbank. The more challenging option leads over hilly landscapes. With both options, you will pass the border between Germany and Luxembourg on the way and get to know the small country and its wine regions. You’ll visit a winegrowers’ cooperative specializing in Cremant, which is also considered the Champagne of the Moselle. Near Remich, your destination today, you can visit a wonderful Roman mosaic floor - with 3 million individual tiles, it depicts images of a gladiatorial contest.

Day 7: Remich – Schengen – Thionville – Metz, approx. 30 km
During breakfast, take a boat to Schengen, where today’s bike tour begins. Almost every European knows about the Schengen Agreement, but hardly anyone knows that the agreement owes its name to this small town on the 3-country border. Once you arrive, you’ll cycle through the beautiful Moselle Valley into France, passing the castle of Sierck-les-Bains on the way. You will continue to Thionville, where you will arrive at the end of the morning or early afternoon. Here the ship will be waiting for you to continue to Metz. Metz offers much beautiful historic architecture, flora and pubs.

Day 8: Metz
End of the trip. Disembarkation after breakfast, by 09:30. Individual departure

In the morning or early afternoon you will reach Neumagen. Here you have the option of already disembarking or to continue cycling to Bernkastel-Kues. Bernkastel is a lively, historical and picturesque town with the best wine region of the Middle Moselle. The pride of the town is the market square with its picturesque half-timbered houses.
