Fascinating, sometimes spectacular, often a bit mystic is the impressive landscape along the Serbian Danube.

The stunning scenery of the Iron Gate - where the Danube is squeezed between near vertical cliffs and narrow gorges - is one of the most impressive European Canyons. Dramatic fortresses high above the river are telling about an eventful past, in small and dreamy villages amidst numerous national parks Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Romanians, Gypsies and Bulgarians are living together. Enjoy their hospitality and learn about their heritage, culture, music, food and wine. Belgrade, vibrant capital and  “White City” at the confluence of Danube and Sava is the starting point of this exciting cycle trip.

 

Travel details

Level 2, The landscape is somtimes completely flat, sometimes slightly hilly (on day 6 and 7 ascents of 3km each). You cycle on paved or dirt roads. The cycling tours are fully van supported so you can easily choose to ride as much - or as little - as you wish.

Day 1: Belgrade

Individual arrival to Belgrade, picturesquely situated at the confluence of Danube and Sava. Take your time to stroll through the pedestrian zone, visit the Cathedral of St. Sava (largest Orthodox church in the world) and the impressive Kalemegdan ruins. After a delicious dinner the evening finishes off with a short walk through the old centre.

Day 2: Belgrade – Bodjani - Bac (27 km cycling)

In the morning transfer by bus (2 1/2 h) from the vibrant city to the fruitful plain of the Vojvodina north of Belgrad and close to Hungary. After a short visit of the impressive serbian orthodoxe monastery of Bodjani you cycle on the Danube bike trail to Bac, a royal town with the oldest fortress of  Vojvodina, whose spectacular walls and trenches are still in place.

Day 3: Bac – Novi Sad (17 Km cycling)

Small roads and an untouched nature – this is real Serbia. Today you cycle along the banks of the Danube to a local fish restaurant (called carda) situated directly on the riverbank hidden between the trees. After a delicious lunch you continue cycling through the natural park of Karadjordjevo, home to one of the largest horse farms in Europe to the village of Backa Palanka and take the bus (1 h) to the stunning city of Novi Sad, capital of Vojvodiba, after Dinner short promenade to the famous “square of liberty” with its impressive builidings.

Day 4: Novi Sad – Skorenovac (15 km cycling)

After breakfast you stop at the famous fortress of Petrovaradin ("Gibraltar of the Danube"), one of the most impressive and massive palace complexes on the territory of Eastern Europe. You cycle through the National Park Fruska Gora and explore the town of Sremski Karlovci which is the centre of the Serbian Orthodox chruch and also the place where the "Treaty of Karlovac" was signed in 1699 to end the Austro-Ottoman war. After visiting a family run wine cellar and the honey museum you taste a selection of Serbian wines and honey. For sure in a good mood the bus will transfer you to an authentic self-sufficient Vojvodina farm where you have lunch. Full of impressions you move on by bus to Skorenovac (3 h), the most southern Hungarian settlement in Europe. You'll enjoy dinner in a typical Hungarian restaurant.

Day 5: Skorenovac – Srebrno Jezero (approx. 50 km cycling)

With a gentle pace you cycle on unpaved roads (5 km) through a rural environment and the Nature Park Deliblatska Pescara. At the narrow of Stara Palanka close to the Romanian border you cross the river on a simple ferry to Ram with its ancient Byzantine fortress. After lunch you continue cycling along the riverbanks to the resort of Srebrno Jezero (Silver Lake). The lake has some excellent beaches and is also very popular for watersports and fishing. Catfish, pike-perch, carp and amur are found in abundance and the lake is in the Guinness Book of Records as the worlds biggest carp (44kg) was caught here.

Day 6: Srebrno Jezero – Donji Milanovac (approx. 50 km cycling)

An unforgettable day: you reach the romantic fortress of Golubac (14th cent.) overlooking the Danube and enter into the spectacular gorges of the Iron Gate (Djerdap National Park) where the Danube River cuts itself into the limestones and vertical cliffs rise serveral hundred meters above the river. The archeological site of Lepenski Vir is one of the places on the planet, that nobody should have missed. The settlement from the Mesolithic age is located high on a sandy terrace of the Danube river. The day ends in the picturesque town of Donji Milanovac.

Day 7: Donji Milanovac – Kladovo (approx. 50 km cycling)

It is one of the most beautiful parts of the Djerdap National Park on our journey through Serbia: cycling up and down through the breathtaking landscape in the heart of the Iron Gate you have a fantastic view to the “Romanian Mount Rushmore” (huge stone portrait of the Dacian king Decebalus in the cliffs on the opposite riverside) and pass the fortresses Diana and Fetislam (reminders of the power and richness of the Roman Empire).

Day 8: Kladovo – Belgrade

After breakfast bustransfer (4h) to Belgrade the Serbian capital; arrival at approx. 1:30 pm.
