From Basl to Mainz. Wine, Historiy and Charme.

Your journey is characterized by wine consumption, thousands of years of history as well as charm from Alsace and Baden. First you cycle through the margrave county to Freiburg. You reach the European city Strasbourg with its famous cathedral and the historic centre (world cultural heritage of the UNESCO). Following the Rhine valley you visit Rastatt with its baroque residence, the city Karlsruhe as well as the previous fortress Germersheim. Furthermore, the Rhine’s three imperial cathedrals are waiting: Speyer, Worms and Mainz.

Level 1-2, Directly along the Rhine the route is flat and you mostly cycle on bicycle ways, quiet side strets, forest paths and unpaved dam ways. The route is completely signposed as “Velo-Route Rhein”. There are some ascents at the both first stages Basel – Badenweiler – Freiburg through the margrave country

Day 1: Basel 
Individual arrival to Basel

Day 2: Basel-Badenweiler (approx. 40-50 km)
From the region where France, Germany and Switzerland meet on, at first you leave the Rhine and then pedal to Badenweiler. Steadily going up and down, you cycle through fruit plantations and grapes with worth-seeing views over the Rhine valley and the Vosges.

Day 3: Badenweiler-Freiburg (approx. 40 km)
Following the foothills of the Black Forest you have a trip in the city of Faust to Freiburg. The old town attracts by the little streams and the cathedral.

Day 4: Freiburg-Kaiserstuhl (approx. 45 km)
The little river Dreisam leads you out of the city to Breisach. Here an excursion to the French Neuf-Brisach would be the right thing before you reach your accommodation.

Day 5: Kaiserstuhl-Strasbourg/Kehl (approx. 60 km)
In Sasbach at the Kaiserstuhl you can change the side of the Rhine in order to continue your way to Strasbourg.

Day 6: Strasbourg/Kehl-Rastatt (approx. 51-60 km)
On the German side you experience the Rhine as a big waterway and source of electricity. Your way leads you through meadows on dam ways to the baroque residence Rastatt.

Day 7: Rastatt-Speyer (approx. 70-75 km)
On the left side of the Rhine you cycle in the palatinate. On the way via Germersheim you have an eye on the Pfälzerand the Odenwald. The highlight finally is the 2000-year old Speyer. The stage can be devided by an overnight stay in
Karlsruhe.

Day 8: Speyer-Worms (approx. 45 km)
After the imperial cathedral, you follow the Rhine and arrive at the next cathedral city: the old imperial and Nibelungs’town Worms.

Day 9: Worms-Mainz (approx. 50 km
)
Through scenic Rhine-Hessian wine regions the landscape is characterized by slopes full of grapes until you reach the once “golden” bishop imperial city Mainz.

Parking:  parking possibilities for the tour (approx. 20/CHF/day), no reservation possible, payable locally

Transfer: You take the train on your own (you change the train max. once, duration approx. 3 hours, 40 € per person and route, RIT simple train journey, second-class without Bahncard, it is possible to take the bike). We can book a suitable train journey for you.

Bikes incl. Panniers:
You can rent 8-gear-unisex-bikes with back-pedalbrake,on request also 24-gear-bikes with freewheeling- mechanism to a limited number. These are equipped with a luggage bag and a handlebar bag, a pump, a repair and first-aid box. We can place electric bikes on your disposal depending on availability. The handing out of the bikes takes place on the first cycling day in the morning and the return after the last cycle stage in the evening.
