Individual arrival at Mauritius airport. Transfer to your first hotel on the southeast coast of the island, where you will spend two nights. Optional bike tour (afternoon): This tour is available to discover the neighbouring town of Mahebourg and its surroundings. Founded in 1805, Mahebourg was the first Mauritian town and port. It has retained its charm from the olden days and you can enjoy an authentic atmosphere. Stop for a visit at the History Museum, an old colonial house that served as a hospital during an epic naval battle between the English and the French. Most of the exhibition is dedicated to this naval history. Admire from far the Lion Mountain – guarding the East coast.
Ride from the hotel toward the South, where you will discover the little known public beaches of La Cambuse and Le Bouchon – a real ride off the beaten track. Continue onwards towards the village of Mon Desert, which was in former times a Sugar Estate. You can still admire its factory, still standing but unused. This is an important part of Mauritian history, as the economy was built on sugar. During this tour you will be surrounded by sugar cane fields – during the Mauritian summer, it will be lush greenery. If your trip is during harvest, you will discover an entirely different landscape.
Day at leisure. Optional bike tour (half day): Bus transfer to the “Ferney Valley”. This valley is the home of a conservation project with a natural reserve of 200 hectares. It contains numerous species of endemic and also endangered fauna and flora, such as the Mauritius kestrel, one of the world’s rarest birds, in danger of extinction. You’ll find also a number of critically endangered trees including two Pandanus species, believed to be extinct until their recent rediscovery. A day at the “Ferney Valley” is a unique experience where you are completely disconnected from civilization and everyday routine.
A shuttle bus will bring you today in your next hotel where you spend two more nights.
This day is at leisure.
Ride by bike toward the North. The route goes along the northeast coast, through several small Mauritian villages, such as Poudre D’OR (meaning Gold Dust). The tour will go through Goodlands, which is the busiest, most populated village in the North. Life takes place on the sidewalks, so you will pass by the numerous shops and stalls, as well as a beautiful temple. The tour ends at a new hotel for two overnights.
This day is at leisure. Optional excursion (full day): a catamaran cruise for those who would like to experience the island on a completely different way than a land tour. The catamaran will head to the islets of the North and stop in the magnificent lagoon of Ilot Gabriel – a great snorkelling opportunity.
This day is at leisure. Optional bus tour available on Tuesdays and Thursdays (full day): Start with a visit of the capital, Port Louis and the busy city centre including the bustling central market. Take a peek at the world-famous Blue Penny Stamp, in a dedicated museum located at the Waterfront, also good for a shopping stop. After this busy morning, you will have the chance to discover the delicious Mauritian cuisine for lunch and finish the day with a walk in the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. Transfer to the west coast for the next two nights.
Taking your bike from the hotel, you will experience the west coast of Mauritius, passing through the village of Tamarin and up to the famous area of Flic en Flac, where you will discover the tropical paradise promised by the postcards. With a stunning long beach and a good swim – you may be tempted to stop there for a break.
This day is at leisure. Transfer to Lakaz Chamarel – a charming guesthouse.
On your last biking day, you will discover the picturesque south west coast of the island, starting with the authentic village of Chamarel seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Chamarel is well known for the 7 coloured earths and the waterfall. An optional stop is possible. You will also pass near the “Rhumerie de Chamarel”, a distillery where agricultural rum is produced. The road leading to the Rhumerie is lined with vast plantations of sugar cane growing side by side with pineapples, palm trees and other tropical fruits. You will also discover the village of Bel Ombre, a preserved environment, where time has stopped. The tour continues along the coastal road with small fishermen’s villages and finishes at the last hotel, where you will stay two nights.
