Szentendre’s Island is located amidst the Danube Bend, which is just outside the gates of Budapest and nearby the Gerecse Mountains. This area is well known as a paradise for cycling and horse riding.

While cycling through the romantic landscape, you will explore picturesque villages, encounter Esztergom’s monumental basilica and will be intrigued by many Hungarian cultural and artistic sights. You’ll get to know the lively art-orientated Village of Szentendre, Hungary’s largest open-air museum at Skanzen and see an exciting horse exhibition. At your charming country inn you can enjoy recreation and relaxation.

Tour profile:

The tour is mostly flat and is sometimes slightly hilly. The Austrian section follows well-maintained and equipped cycling paths, in Hungary you will often cycle on country back and side roads. Upon entering and leaving cities there is, but of course, traffic that must be closely observed!!

Day 1: Szentendre Island

Individual arrival on Szentendre Island. Approximately 25 km north of Budapest. Here we go!

2. – 6. Day – recommended routes

Szentendre/Skanzen (approx. 15-20 km)

Feel the nostalgia of the past that flowing through picturesque art-filled villages with lots of museums and galleries to enjoy. In the Szabo Marzipan Museum you can see replicas of many important Hungarian buildings such as the Parliament building in Budapest and even a life-sized Michael Jackson. Just outside of Szentendre, you have the special opportunity to visit Hungary’s largest open-air museum in Skanzen.

Esztergom (approx. 50 km + Ship and Train)

You cycle along the Szentendre-Island to the beautiful city of Visegrad. During a ship ride to Esztergom, you will enjoy a fascinating view of the Danube Bend. The cupola of the basilica, Hungary’s biggest church, greets you from afar. A short train ride will shorten the trip back to your hotel.

Budapest (approx. 50 km)

Today the bike path leads you to the charming Danube metropolis Budapest. On your way to the city centre you pass by the Parliament building and the famous Chain Bridge. You will get to know lots of attractions and sights like the Fisherman’s Bastion on Castle Hill or the Central Market Hall which offers a big variety of culinary delicacies from all Hungarian regions. You can shorten the cycling leg by taking the train upon request.

Visegrad (approx. 47 km)

You cycle through the island’s untouched nature and arrive in Visegrad where you discover the Royal Palace and the ruins of a medieval castle. After climbing the hill you are rewarded with a beautiful view over the whole Danube Bend region. The cycling path leads you through gentle rolling hills and back to the Baroque village of Vác with teeming culture and life as well as the spectacularly still intact monuments and buildings of the 18th and 19th century.

Trip to Farmhouse and Equestrian Ranch (approx. 17 km)

You make a short bike trip to a charming Bodor farmhouse & horse ranch where you will attend an exciting expedition. The Hungarians are famous for their hospitality and you are invited to taste and sample regional delicacies such as salty cake and Schnaps. The Csikós, the traditional Hungarian horse herders, will surprise you with their impressive show.

Day 7: Szentendre-Island

Individual departure. Possibilities are numerous. You can book an additional night in Budapest or extend your stay in Vienna, the metropolis city of the Waltz. We naturally handle your accommodation.

In Budapest we highly recommend to join a city tour by bike.

In Vienna we highly recommend to visit an unforgettable Waltz- and Operetta-Concert
