Level 1, The area is flat without any climbs. You bike on cycle paths, mostly along the shore of the lake, no major uphill stretches.
Individual arrival. Enjoy the fantastic city centre with its Sea Life Center and the archeologial museum.
You will cycle past the Wollmatinger Ried (marsh), an important bird sanctuary, and reach the island of Reichenau, which has been a UNESCO world culture and heritage site since 2001. The island is an excellent testament to the religious and cultural role of a large Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages. You will travel by boat to the idyllic peninsula of Höri. You will cycle through Stein am Rhein and along the banks of the Rhein until you reach medieval Diessenhofen with its wooden Rhein bridge.
Today you will cycle along a beautiful riverscape to Schaffhausen. Its intact, medieval townscape is overlooked by the Munot fort, which was built in the 16th Century according to the principles of Albrecht Dürer’s fortification teachings. Then you will visit the Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Central Europe. A boat will bring you to the Rheinfall rocks, so you will experience the full force of the thunderous waters. On your return journey by boat you can relax and enjoy the Upper Rhein landscape passing you by.
You will cycle up along the Rhein today back to Stein am Rhein. Due to its many buildings decorated with frescoes, its city gates and medieval laneways, the town deserves its name "Rothenburg of the Upper Rhein". Numerous picturesque Swiss fishing villages lie along your return path through the peaceful countryside of the Lower Lake. Napoleon's stepdaughter Hortense de Beauharnais made this area her adopted home. You will visit her former home in Arenenberg, which is now a Napoleon museum.
Today you will explore the "flower island" of Mainau. Make sure you take enough time to enjoy this paradise-like island on the Überlingen Lake with its luxurious, colourful flowerbeds, towering mature trees, shady forests and sweet scented roses. After your visit you will have a short cycle through Allensbach, which is well known due to its public opinion research institute, to the former imperial town and modern Kneipp health resort of Radolfzell.
You will cross over the Bodanrück hills at Stahringen and will reach the old town of Bodman, which is located in a sheltered area between the steep slopes of the hills and the Überlingen Lake. The Northern shores of Lake Constance will spoil you with numerous historical monuments: monasteries former imperial towns, baroque churches and old castles. In Uhldingen you will have the chance to visit reconstructed lake dwellings. You will learn about the ancient history of the lake region and the traditional construction methods of lake dwellings, which can be traced back as a dwelling form in this region to 4,000 B.C.
Meersburg, the well known wine growing area, awaits you today with numerous attractions. You will visit the old castle, which is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany and which was also the last dwelling place of the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Accompanied by a beautiful panoramic view of the Alps, you will cycle towards the lively town of Friedrichshafen where you can visit the Zeppelin museum.
Today's tour leads you through Langenargen, where you can admire the model for the world famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. You will then cycle through expansive orchards and reach the Bavarian metropolis of Lindau, whose protected old town is on an island. After a few kilometres you will find yourself on Austrian soil and cycle directly along the lakeshore towards the drama festival town of Bregenz with its unique lakeside stage.
The cable car will bring you and your bicycle to the top of the Pfänder, the Bregenz mountain which is 1064m high. Enjoy the stunning view of the Alps and over the lake. You will then descend along tarred roads back to Bregenz. This descent takes about a half an hour. You will then continue along the lake through the delta mouth of the Rhein descending from the Swiss Alps and in Altenrhein with its Hundertwasser Hall you will have reached Swiss soil.
Please ensure you have good brakes for this descent! If you are unsure then you can leave your bike in the hotel or at the valley station of the cable car and make the descent by foot or with the cable car.
Today you will need a sturdy pair of shoes! The small mountain railway will bring you to the picturesque village of Heiden, in the Appenzell countryside. You will climb 400 metres along the leisurely journey through the idyllic and hilly countryside. Then you will follow the well signposted joke hiking trail ("Witzwanderweg") to Walzenhausen. The hike takes about 2.5 hours without breaks and you will have a wonderful view over the lake. Instead of hiking you could take the bus (Postbus: Price from ca. 6 Swiss Francs not inclusive). In Walzenhausen a mountain railway will bring you back to the lake at Rheineck and a boat will bring you along a romantic branch of the Rhein back to Rorschach.
The last day on the Lake Constance cycle path belongs to the Swiss canton of Thurgau, which due to its many orchards and its comparatively isolated situation is also lovingly known as "Cider India". The small towns of Arbon and Romanshorn with their castles and wooden-frame houses will delight visitors. You can also enjoy the view over the lake with a "Schümli" (= Swiss coffee on an espresso basis) on one of the numerous lake side terraces.
