The Werra cycle path is a well marked and very well constructed cycle path. A moderate fitness level is required.

Day 1: Meiningen

Individual arrival to Meiningen - the world-famous theatre city. Visit the Theatermuseum Meiningen, a house with 230 years of tradition. Walk through the English Garden, a tranquil oasis in midst of the busy city life. Many half timbered houses are characteristic for the historic town. Castle Elisabethenburg (visit included), once the residence of the Dukes of Sachsen-Meiningen, leads you back in time. Visit the Castle Museum, a mix of Baroque, Neorenaissance and Classicistic styles. An unusual site to see is the 20.000 old Götz-cave. Immerse into the largest public accessible cleft cave of Europe.

Day 2: Round trip Werra springs Meiningen (approx. 60 km/26 miles)

Today you can leave your suitcase unpacked. Take the train from Meiningen to the spring. Enjoy the idyllic setting and inform yourself about the spring and then set off on the cycle tour. You cycle through unspoilt nature through clean air past little towns Schwarzenbrunn, Eisfeld and Hildeburgshausen. Here you should visit the residential castle, once visited by Goethe. Continue back to Meiningen via Themar. In Meiningen there are many restaurants and beer-gardens to enjoy a relaxed evening.

Day 3: Meiningen - Bad Salzungen (approx. 43 km/22 miles)

Today you follow river Werra to Bad Salzungen. The popular Werra cycle path crosses Wasungen, a town famous for the half timbered houses and the carnival. We recommend visiting the fortress Maienluft, the symbol of Wasungen. After this short culture-break you continue cycling to Bad Salzungen. The bath-town has many points of interest to visit: the salination work, the Celtic Spa and historic old town. After dinner we invite you to visit the Celtic Spa, a unique thermal spa, for relaxing two hours.

Day 4: Bad Salzungen - Dankmarshausen (approx. 40 km/22 miles)

Relaxed cycling between the south slopes of Thuringian forest and Rhön hills. The first stop is bound to be underground - visit the show-mine in Merkers. Continue cycling to Vacha with historic old town. Afterwards you cross the old border. The Museum Phillipsthal tells the story of the old intra-German border. Only a short distance away is Heringen, a place known for the Werra-Kali-Mining-Museum. If you still have capacities for new impressions there is the stone-salt mining waste heap "Monte Kali" to visit.

Day 5: Dankmarshausen - Eisenach (approx. 37 km/29 miles)

Nature is dominating today. Follow the bends of Werra cycle path past lakes and nature reserves. Fresh air and varied countryside along the road let time fly by. Cycle through Untersuhl with unique rotund church and through Hörschel, where you leave Werra valley. Only a few kilometres now and you reach Eisenach. Explore the famous town of Wartburg, home of many celebrities as e.g. Luther, Goethe and Bach. Visit Wartburg, Bach´s house and Luther´s house.

Day 6: Eisenach - Eschwege (approx. 58 km/26 miles)

After an excursion into the automobile history of Eisenach you continue following the river Werra through marvellous river meadows. On Elisabeth´s path and Werra cycle path you find the historic monastic estate Wilhelmsglücksbrunn. Rest between the old walls from the 14th century, sustain yourself and enjoy the tranquillity. Continue on Werra cycle path past intimidating lime cliffs to Creuzberg with fortress and stone bridge, half timbered houses and small alleyways. Further points of interest along the route are Treffurt and fortress Normannstein with medieval and mainly Romanesque fortification from the 11th century. The fortress protected three fords crossing river Werra and name giver to the town. The charming town centre of Eschwege invites for a leisurely stroll.

Day 7: Eschwege - Hannoversch Münden (approx. 59 km/37 miles)

Today culture and arts are your companions. Cycle along the Werra-Meißner-Land past sculptures of many renowned artists. Salt- and bath-town Bad Sooden invites to rest. Continue to cherry-town Witzenhausen and then to your destination of today, Hannoversch Münden. The medieval old town with castle of the Welfs as well as the old port are the most important points of interest. Enjoy a good dinner at the restaurant and see the place, where Werra and Fulda embrace and loose their names.

Day 8: Hannoversch Münden

The tour is completed after breakfast. Individual departure or extension.
