As a little river in the "Schwenninger Moos" the Neckar is struggling through enormous mountains on its way to Rottweil. Then the river is getting wider and you reach the first vineyards.

You will pass Esslingen and the old spa resort Bad Cannstattand reach the federal state capital Stuttgart. On your way to Heilbronn you will pass by beautiful cities like Marbach, Besigheim and Lauffen. After Bad Wimpfen, The Neckar-Valley is getting narrow again and the river guides you through the forest Odenwald with numerous castles. Shortly after the popular university town of Heidelberg the Neckar is reaching the Rhine.

Tour profile:

Level 2; You are cycling mostly cycle paths, tarred roads and mostly silent side streets along the river bank and partly on the Neckar heights and vineyards. Therefore you have to get over single ascents.

 

Day 1: Villingen Schwenningen

Individual Arrival.

Day 2: Villingen-Schwenningen - Sulz/Surroundings (approx. 55-65 km)

The first stage will lead you, with a shor rise, to Rottweill, Baden-Württemberg's oldest wosn. Then you will follow the idyllic Neckar with extensively unspoiled river landscape via Oberndorf until you reach Sulz.

Day 3: Sulz/Surroundings - Tübingen (approx. 44-55 km)

Today you will continue cycling following the Necakr to Horb and further on to Rottenburg. From here the landscape is getting wider and the Neckar accompanies you to the Swabian university town Tübingen.

Day 4: Tübingen - Esslingen (approx. 55 km)

Visit the little towns Nürtingen and Plochingen where the river gets navigable and cycle to Esslingen. The ist is waiting for you with its historic flair and has an old tradition as a a trading city.

Day 5: Esslingen - Marbach/Freiberg (approx. 40-45 km)

Today you can have a trip to Stuttgart. Behind BAd Cannstatt you leave the industrial area and reach the Swabian vineyards. On your way , the wine is now getting your constant companion.

Day 6: Marbach/Freiberg - Bad Wimpfen/Surroundings (approx. 60-65 km)

Along the vineyards the river guides you to well-known sites and the "Käthe" town heilbronn. Afterwards the route is meandering through the party deep plain landscape and steep sandstone rocks.

Day 7: Bad Wimpfen/Surroundings - Heidelberg (approx. 75 km)

Today castles are lined up like a pearl necklace along the Neckar. Experience the Middle Ages before you reach the castle of Heidelberg. From Eberbach you can take the train or ship in order to reach Heidelberg earlier (not incl.)

Day 8: Heidelberg
