Altmühltal beer tour

medieval towns and beer brewing tradition
 529,-

During the course of the Altmühltal Beer Tour through Romantic Franconia you will experience and taste the Franconian brewing tradition.

Cycling along the Beer cycle path in the Aisch Valley, which, with an average of one brewery per kilometre, has the highest concentration of breweries in the world, you will be able to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in beatuiful beer gardens. You will get to know the famous cities of Rothenburg, Nuremberg and Bamberg, which will impress you with their medieval townscapes. The daily routes of this tour are somewhat longer and require a certain level of fitness. However, those unused to cycling long distances can shorten the long routes by taking the train.

Travel details

Tour profile:

Level 2-3, hilly streches with lots of small ascents, mostly along quiet rural roads, sometimes along forest and agricultural tracks.

Day 1: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Indivudial arrival to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The old town was rebuilt after it was completely destroyed in the 30 years war and is practically unchanged since then. The town has been immortalised by artists such as Spitzweg and Richter. The town walls with its towers and gateways are a good example of urban fortification.

Day 2: Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Ansbach (approx. 55km/34miles)

The first day of cycling begins with a number of options along the Alb plateau. Although a little out of the way, we recommend you visit the source of the Altmuehl (approx. 16 km) and make the steep ascent to Colmberg Castle, which hasn’t changed since the 12th century. Then you have the choice of the direct route to Herrieden, or the route which passes through Ansbach with its beautiful Rococo castle of the Brandenburg electoral princes.

Day 3: Ansbach - Nuremberg (approx. 75km/47miles)

You will continue to follow the cycle path of the German Castle Road past Wasserburg Castle in Lichtenau. On the way to Roth we recommend you take a look at the small towns of Windsbach and Abenberg with their historic town centres. In Roth itself you shouldn´t miss a visit to the Margrave´s castle of Ratibor. Near Katzwang you will then come to the Rhine-Main-Danube-Canal, which will accompany you on your way to Nuremberg. You will come across many breweries offering their beer along the route, including the brewery of the discalced friars.

Day 4: Nuremberg - Bamberg (approx. 70-80km/43-50miles)

Today you have to make a difficult choice: You can decide to take the 80 km Regnitz Cycle Path through picturesque valleys, towns and small villages following along the Regnitz River, or you can pick the 70 km long route along the Main-Danube-Canal. You could also combine both routes and/or shorten part of the route by taking the train. Your destination for the day is Bamberg, one of the “capital cities of beer”.

Day 5: Bamberg - Neustadt an der Aisch (approx. 55km/34miles or 70km/43miles)

The first part of today's route takes you back a little along yesterday´s route to Hirschaid, you can also shorten this part of the route by taking the train (ticket not included). In Hirschaid, you will turn right and follow along the Aisch Valley. After the halfway point on today´s route, you have the option of taking a break in Höchstadt, to taste the famous mirror carps, before returning to Neustadt.

Day 6: Neustadt an der Aisch  - Rothenburg ob der Tauber (approx. 60km/37miles)

The last day of cycling brings you to Bad Windsheim with its beautiful old town and the Franconian Open-Air Museum. This museum features a number of reconstructions of historical buildings in extensive grounds and in the tavern you will be able to take a break and taste the home-brewed beer. Once you arrive back in Rothenburg your journey comes to an end against the town´s medieval backdrop. An evening city tour with the nightwatchman is not to be missed!

Day 7: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Individual departure or extension.
