Discover the Netherlands - the country of wind mills, tulips and canals - in a different way: Cycle through a fascinating landscape during the day and enjoy the evenings on a typical Dutch house boat.

Not until the 17th Century were large parts of the area north of Amserdam were recovered from the sea and reclaimed through the use of hundreds of windmills. It´s here that you will find the typical Dutch landscape of polders, mills, harbours and tulips.
our tip: book early, because of limited capacity!

Travel details

Tour Profile:

Flat, asphalted bike paths and side roads, ideal for children.
If you don't  want to cycle, you can stay on the house boat.

Day 1: Amsterdam arrival (approx. 20 km/12 miles)

individual arrival to Amsterdam. Embarkation at 4.00 pm - then a little cycling tour.

Day 2: Amsterdam - Volendam (approx. 42 km/26 miles)

A ferry takes you to the Amsterdam Noord quarter and soon you will be cycling through the rural area of Waterland. In this soggy peat land the houses and villages are hardly above waterlevel. The route is now continued to the historic village of Monnickendam and to Volendam, today´s destination.

Day 3: Volendam - Enkhuizen (approx. 58 km or 27 km/36 miles or 22 miles)

If you have decided to cycle all of today´s itinerary, your first stop will be Edam. Famous for its little "Edamers", the round shaped cheese (coated with red wax for export). After Edam the tour takes you further along the dike in northerly direction towards the city of Hoorn. For those who have enjoyed the mornging´s trip on the barge the cycling is taken up here. You continue on the dike with a wonderful view over the Markermeer on your right and West-Frisian villages on your left.

Day 4: Enkhuizen - Medemblik, sailing to Texel (approx. 43 km/27 miles)

The cycling tour starts on the IJsselmeer dike and is then left behind to go through a nature reserve and some typical West-Frisian villages towards Medemblik, the oldest city of West-Friesland. A city with an illustrious past and with Radboud castle, datin from the 13th century. At Medemblik you get on board and sail to the isle of Texel.

Day 5: Texel, round trip (approx. 40-66 km/25-41 miles)

The isle of Texel, which is one municipality, is the largest of the Dutch Wadden islands. The average lenght of Texel is 20 km and the average width 8 km. A tour around this island with its numerous cycle tracks is well worth the effort.

Day 6: Texel - Alkmaar (approx. 30-58 km/19-36 miles)

The ship takes you back to the mainland, where you disembark in the city of Den Helder. Today´s route takes you through the dunes. Your destination of today is Alkmaar, also called the City of Cheese. Its weigh house was the first in the country and it is here that the weighing and trading of cheese used to take place.

Day 7: Alkmaar - Zaanse Schans - Amsterdam (approx. 45 km/28 miles)

After leaving Alkmaar the stage takes you cycle to Zaanse Schans. A unique hamlet where people live and work, with original houses and windmills from the river Zaan area. Once you reach the boat in Amsterdam it is time to leave your bikes. If you like you can visit the center of Amsterdam.

Day 8: Amsterdam

individual departure - disembarkation at approx. 9.00 am
